About the Sydney campus

MED2000, class of 2014

Closely modelled on the already established and well recognised University of Notre Dame School of Medicine, Fremantle; the School of Medicine Sydney (SoMS) is already recognised as a leader in medical education in Australia. SoMS strives to graduate doctors who will practice in all geographic, socioeconomic and professional areas and this is illustrated through its innovative and considered teaching approaches. It is focused on producing future medical leaders with values placed on patient centred healthcare. Students receive hands-on training, personal and professional mentoring and academic support from a group of tutors composed of practicing doctors in fields including: General Practice, Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, Cardiology, Paediatrics, Anaesthetics, Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The selection criteria for SoMS recognises each student on academic merit as well as the student’s ability to prove a passion and commitment to extra-medical activities including sport, music, volunteering and leadership. Hence, the cohort comprises students who have a genuine commitment to the profession, compassion for the community, and high academic standards. In addition to medical training, SoMS also receives instruction on medical business, medical law and bioethics. These additional units encourage students to become well-rounded individuals who are able to contemplate the greater and wider ethical issues of healthcare.
