This year, Global HANDS is joining forces with PROJECT FUTURES, a Sydney based, non-profit organisation, run by a passionate network of young and inspiring professionals. PROJECT FUTURES raises awareness and funds for programs dedicated to combating human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Australia and South-East Asia. The money raised contributes to the funding of rescue, recovery, education and reintegration of victims, as well as advocacy for the cause. One of the organisations key recipients of these funds is right on our doorstep, a safe house for women in Surry Hills. Each year, PROJECT FUTURES runs the “Stella Fella” campaign. You may remember Notre Dame being involved in this last year, when our guys were styled in Stella Fella Bow Ties at MEDBALL and around campus on Stella Fella Bow Tie Friday.

In 2013, Notre Dame will be the first University to formally engage in a fundraising relationship with Project Futures through the Stella Fella campaign. For more info on the campaign visit http://www.stellafella.com/index.php

On Thursday 6th June Global HANDS will be holding a Stella Fella @ Notre Dame Launch Evening where Founder of PROJECT FUTURES, Stephanie Lorenzo will give a brief introduction to the Stella Fella campaign. She will also be allowing us to screen “Half the Sky” a documentary based on the book written by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn which explores the personal stories of oppressed women around the world who have suffered from injustices such as lack of education, sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation amongst other violations of their human rights. PROJECT FUTURES remains the sole organisation within Australia with screening rights for this amazing documentary – so we are very privaledged to be able to screen this for you all.

She’s bound to do a ‘bang’-up job ha. ha. ha.

Lot’s to get excited about on the Wellbeing front, especially with the first ever Wellbeing SUPER WEEKEND coming up in early May (pending some final student life approval).

First of all – Avant will be hosting their talk “Social Media and Medicine” as part of the Mentoring Program at 12pm on April 26th. The event features a great talk and food generously provided by Avant for those attending the event.

On Friday May 3, we’ll be bringing the Naked Runners – Dave Robertson and Silas Moss down from Newcastle for an entertaining and informative evening titled: “Exercise is the Best Medicine”, followed by a fundraising BBQ for ‘Run for a Reason’. On Saturday, Dave and Silas are presenting their RUNBETTER Workshop at a discounted price for MANDUS members in Sydney Park, St. Peters. I have just seen these guys speak at the Newcastle Running Forum and can attest to their incredibly enthusiasm, brilliant banter and clear passion for what they preach! Finally, on Sunday May 5 we will be bringing back the MANDUS Family Picnic for another great day of fun in Centennial Park.

Stay tuned for more information on these events as it comes!

Sorry and all that, but it’s only because we’ve been super duper busy with all sorts of wonderful events over the first couple of months of the year! Some highlights include:

MedCamp 2013: Wow. Our new MED1000s sure do know how to party! A year of retiring wallflowers they are not. The camp went off with a bang and was a blur of events, trauma treatment competitions and a few quiet drinks in the evening. Have a look at our pictures here and relive the good times.

MedFest / Scrubcrawl: Our annual battle of the wits was once again an intense trivia competition between combined 1st and 2nd yearPBL groups dressed in a costume starting with their PBL letter. So we had gangsters squaring off against firemen, investigators and even James Bond characters. In the end it was PBL B who look the trophy back to their room leaving a phalanx of sobbingly defeated med students in their wake. Photos, of course, are here.

World’s greatest shave: Last year was a good showing of med boys getting their hair shaved and dyed in the name of cancer awareness. This year the MED1000′s put in an incredibly strong showing and did ND proud. If you like seeing people with voluntarily bald bonces then have a peek.

Sports: We’re so impressed with the efforts of Pat Tully and his team in organising some great sporting events this year. We had a great match of touch footy between the MED1000s and MED2000s – everyone played their hearts out but there could only be one winner and that winner was MED1000. Just. We’re not bitter, we’re just…Shut up! We’ve got the interfaculty battle of the sports the ND gift coming up this friday AND the NSW medical school swimming carnival on the same day. Results to follow, but we’re feeling confident.

Surgical Talks: The surgical society put on an incredible show for their first surgical talk series by getting the inimitable Dr Charlie Teo to come and give a sold out crowd a provocative and fascinating talk about the cutting edge of neurosurgery and his career.

There’s more, lot’s more, but we’ll leave you for now with a huge thank you to all the great people who’ve made the above possible so far and an excited look to the future which includes: RED Party, Med Ball and the AMSA Convention. Till next time.
